Pizza dough without yeast - easy and quick recipe
Pizza dough is traditionally baked with yeast – but sometimes there is none in the house. Like right know during the CoronaVirus pandemie, in my closest supermarket it is sold out almost all the time because more people are baking at home at the moment.
And sometimes it has to be a quick to make recipe, then yeast is not the right choice because it needs some time.
Fortunately, all this is no reason to forego delicious, homemade pizza. Because pizza dough also works wonderfully with baking powder and can be prepared in no time at all.
This pizza variation is also a great alternative for those who has a yeast intolerance.
We do recommend using organic quality ingredients. This is how you ensure that the food does not contain any residues of chemical pesticides and that it was not genetically modified.
Ingredients for one Pizza: Pizza dough without yeast
- 350 g / 2 1/2 cups flour (spelt* or wheat as you like)
- 3 tsp baking powder*
- 1 tsp salt
- 3 tbsp oil (olive, rapeseed, sunflower…)
- 180-200ml (3/4 cup + 2 tbsp) plant based milk* (my fave is homemade oat milk) or water (roughly)
- a bit dried herbs (oregano, rosemary, etc..)
The pizza base is ready in just five minutes. Compared to approx 1 hr if you use a yeast dough.
Here’s how it works:
- Preheat oven: 200C/400F
- Put the flour, baking powder and some salt in a bowl.
- Mix everything up.
- Mix the (vegetable) milk and the olive oil together and then add the mixture to the flour.
- Add the dried herbs to the pizza dough.
- Take a hand mixer and knead the whole thing into a smooth dough. Alternatively, you can knead the dough with your hands.
- Sprinkle some flour on a work surface and roll out the dough thinly.
Take a clean baking sheet and drizzle it with a little olive oil.
- Now spread the dough on it.
- You can now top the Pizza as you like. I used tomato sauce, onions, red pepper, tofu, sweet corn, carrots, courgette/zuchini…
- The pizza should bake at 200 degrees celcius / 400 F top / bottom heat for 15 to 20 minutes.
- After the baking I like to top my pizza with some hot chili sauce and fresh herbs.
If the dough is a little too sticky, don’t panic, just use some more flour until the dough won’t stick to your hands anymore. It can be different for what kind of flour you use, so either don’t pour all the liquid at once, or just have some extra flour ready!
A homemade pizza sauce is a good basis. Vegetable leftovers that you already have at home (#preventfoodwaste) or regional vegetables from the market are suitable as toppings. To prevent the topping from burning, you can drizzle the pizza with a little oil.
If you are vegan but miss the cheese on the pizza, look for vegan cheese in a good sorted supermarket. I am not a huge fan of vegan cheese or meat substitutes, because they are mostly highly processed, and filled with a lot of ingredients you might not want if you are striving a healthy lifestyle, but if you just eat it once in a while, enjoy it
